KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- Police busted the online 'Parcel and Love' cheating syndicate with the arrest of five Nigerian men and 10 of their local accomplices, including seven women, at around noon yesterday.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department deputy director (intelligence and operations) Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said all suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were nabbed in several locations here following a report made by a victim, who is a businesswoman from Singapore, who claimed that she was cheated of RM566,590 by the syndicate over the past six months.
He said the 60-year-old victim claimed that she was acquainted with a member of the syndicate, who posed as a man from Ireland, through Facebook last July.
"As a gesture of friendship, the suspect told her that he would send her a package containing cash of RM750,000. The victim was notified about the package via email on Aug 21 last year.
"Then, she was asked to make necessary payment for the package, including customs duty and insurance coverage. She also made 12 payments to four bank accounts on the suspect's request," he told a press conference here today.
Abdul Jalil said the victim finally realised that she was cheated as she never received the promised package.
Police also seized 14 account books, 21 ATM cards, 10 mobile phones and a laptop computer used by the syndicate.
He said initial investigation found that the five Nigerian men had entered the country using student visas.
"We also found that almost RM1.2 million had been credited into the account owned by one of the syndicate's female members," he said.
In another development, Abdul Jalil said the police had seized 28,000 pirated DVDs and VCDs worth RM224,000 and arrested the men, aged between 20 and 30, in a raid on a house in Shah Alam, Selangor, yesterday.
He said they were believed to have been active in producing and distributing pirated DVDs and VCDs in the area since last year.
"During the arrest, they were uploading the DVDs and VCDs into a Toyota Camry," he added
