Frontier Airlines Flight 719 was on its way from Washington, D.C., to Denver when severe weather forced the plane to "circle in western Nebraska" before making an unscheduled landing in Cheyenne, Wyoming, because it was running out of fuel.
After sitting on the runway for more than an hour, the passengers started to get restless in the stuffy, hot cabin. That's when Captain Gerhard Brandner made a phone call that would change his life, ensuring that he would go down in history as the Greatest Airline Captain of All Time. At that moment, Captain Brandner ordered Dominos pizza.
"The captain took his own initiative," passenger Logan Marie Torre told Fox 31. "He said 'Ladies and gentlemen, Frontier Airlines is known for being one of the cheapest airlines in the U.S., but your captain is not cheap. I just ordered pizza for the entire plane.'
A Domino's driver delivered almost 40 pizzas to the plane as it waited on the tarmac, and one can't help but wonder if the cheers that erupted from that cabin could be heard inside the terminal. The flight was on the ground for almost two hours – two delicious, cheese-and-pepperoni covered hours – before safely continuing on to Denver.
"If the need arises, you need to take care of your passengers," Captain Brandner said. "They are my responsibility the moment they step on the aircraft until they get off the aircraft."
