Veteran striker Didier Drogba is on the brink of finalising a sensational return to Chelsea.
Drogba is expected to link up with the Blues this week as talks over a one-year player/coaching role are close to being concluded.
The 36-year-old is a free agent after his contract at Galatasaray ended and is keen to link up with his former club again.
Drogba spent eight successful years at Chelsea between 2004-12 scoring 157 goals, as well as the decisive penalty kick in the shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final two years ago.
Manager Jose Mourinho wants his experience in the squad following Cole and Lampard’s departure and will take one of the three forward berths allocated alongside Costa and Fernando Torres.
There have been reports that the club are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a £13m deal for Torres, however Standard Sport understands the Spanish international is now expected to remain at the club.
Drogba’s return increases the doubts over Romelu Lukaku’s position. He will start pre-season training on July 30th and a decision will be taken on his destination after that.
Everton, Tottenham, Wolfsburg and Juventus all want to sign the 21-year-old, who craves regular first team football. The presence of Costa, Torres and Drogba will ensure he is way down the pecking order.
